Necklaces come in a variety of lengths (as well as chain styles which we cover in another post), each with a distinct look and feel. Selecting the perfect length depends on a few different things, including your personal style, your frame/neck size, as well as the kind of neckline of the top you'll be pairing it with.

Ultimately, there is no right or wrong when it comes to choosing your chain length. It’s more about whether its a comfortable fit for you and whether you like how it falls/where it sits.

common necklace lengths

Choker 14” - 16”

A choker style necklace sits high on the neck and close to the skin, often just above the collarbone. The length of the choker would depend on the frame, smaller petite frames would wear a 14” and larger frames most likely a 16”. This length is great for tops with an open neckline or crew neck, and looks great when layered with other longer chains. Typically a choker will have a rounder shape to it because of where it sits. If it carries a small charm this will often sit in the little space between your collarbones at the base of the neck.

Princess 16” or 18”

The most popular chain length, a princess necklace falls elegantly on the collarbone and just above the heart if carrying a charm. It's versatile and flatters most body shapes, making it suitable for everyday wear with various necklines. Petite frames with smaller necks should choose a 16” in this instance, for the majority an 18” is perfect. Chains this length that are worn with a charm or locket of some sort, will have a v-like shape to them.

Our beautiful ‘Heart of Gold’ necklaces come on an 18” chain with an adjustable 16” option.

Matinee 20” - 24”

A matinee necklace is a slightly longer chain which reaches the bust area. It works well with plunging necklines or layered with shorter chains. For men, this length typically falls at the collarbone. A chain this length is perfect for carrying a larger style charm or locket.

Opera 28” - 34”

An opera necklace rests between the bust and the bottom of the ribcage. This chain length is perfect for larger charms and pendants, and great for layering with other shorter chains. This longer style looks great with high necklines and over the top of clothes. It makes a great statement piece, a bit like a cocktail ring.
